South Hampstead High School – wellbeing projects

(Roof)top to toe wellbeing

We enjoyed working with South Hampstead High School and GDST on the urban jungle project, so were pleased when they got in touch about two other wellbeing projects:

1. Improvements to their roof terrace

We’ve redesigned the existing roof terrace as a versatile and inviting space for learning, socialising and relaxing.

Seating is nestled in among plant beds and raised planters full of plants chosen to be resilient, beautiful and bring biodiversity to the roof, while a lightweight structure provides sun and rain protection and a teaching wall. Low glare lighting allows the space to be used in the evenings for events but reduces the potential for light pollution that could affect neighbouring properties and wildlife.

It’s a small project that will have a big impact, beautifully put by the school’s Head of Student Support & Academic Access:

“The new roof terrace will bring benefits to the whole South Hampstead community. Through the use of texture, fragrance, and colour, we aim to create a sensory-rich environment that supports calm and focus, particularly for pupils with anxiety, ADHD, and ASD. A central idea in planning the roof terrace space was to provide quiet, sheltered spots where students and staff can pause for a moment of reflection when needed, helping to reduce their stress levels and promote wellbeing. The lovely views, framed by trees, will offer a connection to the outdoors, encouraging curiosity and a sense of wellbeing.”

2. New fitness facilities

Meanwhile, down in the basement, a new wellbeing hub offers cardio fitness, free weights and yoga. Much like our gym at the Bank of England and health club at Canary Wharf, we’ve aimed to make it feel light and airy despite the absence of natural light. The space will be open to staff and students before and after school to promote everyday activity.
