Canary Riverside Spa

Bringing light and luxury to the lower levels of a development on the Thames

The Canary Riverside Spa in east London is located in a complex comprising a hotel, 322 residential apartments and a restaurant.

Walters & Cohen carried out significant alterations to the existing structure to create a clear, elegant design and maximise the space available. The design approach from the outset was to use a palette of beautiful, natural materials while maximising the theme of water. The gymnasium on the two upper floors and the pool hall offer breathtaking views across the River Thames, creating a sense of calm away from the busy corporate environment of Canary Wharf.

A light steel and glass stair links the four floors of the club. The luxurious spa is at the lowest level, with four hydropools in the main area with jets for body, neck and foot massage. The changing rooms and beauty areas have been designed to the highest standards as richly textured timber-lined rooms. The feeling of warm stone, the warm colour of timber, the play of light and sound of moving water provide a sensuous atmosphere. Suspended glass shower cubicles, timber-clad saunas and steam rooms, and generous relaxation areas create an environment described by one user as ‘timeless’.
