New energy-efficient sports club (the building, not the people)

In the summer of 2012 Walters & Cohen was approached by Maccabi GB to design a new sports centre in Barnet, north London. The proposed site at Rowley Lane Sports Ground is shared with the London Maccabi Vale cricket club and includes tennis courts, a bowling green, cricket square and seven football pitches. The on-site club house hosts social events and is available for hire for functions.

The proposed new sports centre will enhance this provision with a large multi-use indoor sports hall for futsal, basketball, volleyball, netball, handball, and table tennis. There will also be a small reception area and cafe, fourteen change rooms for players, two for referees, a community hall with viewing terrace, kitchen, store rooms and plant room.

The area of the new sports hall will be around 3800m2, and every effort has been made to design an elegant and lightweight structure to reduce the impact of building in the Green Belt.

The sustainability strategy includes strong passive design elements, minimising the carbon footprint of the development, reducing the reliance on mechanical systems and reducing energy consumption. We have made best possible use of natural daylight and ventilation and specified sustainable materials, green roofs, grey water recycling, highly efficient engineering systems and the use of solar thermal panels in conjunction with heat pump technology.
