Decarbonising Pembroke's estate

Following our masterplan, we have continued to work with Pembroke. Sensitive integration of heat pumps, secondary glazing and replacement windows are combined with cost-effective fabric upgrades, refurbishment and planned maintenance works to modernise the historic buildings without compromising their character, and save our client money on their energy bills.

These include:

Old Quad

We received planning permission for the refurbishment and decarbonisation of Grade I listed buildings in Old Quad. This included turning bedrooms on staircases into Fellows’ sets. The works mostly comprised secondary glazing and replacing 11 dormer windows from the 1970s that were in poor condition. We researched materials, such as the timber and the right coatings, so that the specification complemented the heritage of the listed buildings. Some careful reconfiguration was needed to improve the layout now the bedrooms were removed.

The Dining Hall

With Salix funding, we introduced a discreet glazed automatic door to keep the draughts out of the Grade II listed dining hall. We also researched a bespoke secondary glazing option that would fit the ornate shape of the stained glass windows.

The GAB

Decarbonisation of post-grad student housing: we removed boilers and replaced them with air source heat pumps.
