Godolphin and Latymer School Masterplan

Masterplan for Godolphin and Latymer's small but beautiful urban site in west London

The Godolphin & Latymer School is an independent school for girls in west London. The school had a number of ambitions for improving its facilities, such as creating flexible classrooms and reducing the number of pupils per form. Of particular importance to the school was the provision of high quality sports facilities within the constraints of the dense urban environment, and improving vehicular access to the site.

Walters & Cohen was employed to develop a masterplan to clarify the choices available, for example, whether any building stock could be demolished, what could replace it, where to build new facilities and how to prioritise and phase the building programme. We first completed a space audit and extensive consultation with staff and the senior management team to establish what facilities were required.

The site includes attractive Victorian listed buildings as well as a variety of newer additions. The masterplan maximises the potential of the site and clarifies the entrance to the school, aiding wayfinding and circulation while ensuring a safe and secure site. The school is also keen that any new buildings be imaginative, beautiful and sustainable. On the back of the masterplan, the school chose Walters & Cohen to design the new sports centre.
