In 2025 we were commissioned by a prestigious independent school to design a play space for pupils aged 4-7 for one of their schools abroad.
The brief called for an indoor landscape that stimulates creativity and playfulness, designed to meet children’s needs on days when the heat prevents them playing outside.
We divided the space into three zones:
The active zone
For energetic play and development of gross motor skills. It includes a climbing wall, nets, fireman’s pole and a trampoline. The yellow pop of colour is a nod to the original school's brand.
The imagination zone
A bamboo forest with platforms and hammocks, where children can play games, make up stories and let their imaginations guide them.
The relaxed zone
This area is for storytelling, quieter play and picnics, and doubles up as a teaching space. Amphitheatre steps can be used as a stage or for sitting with friends. An area of raised floor includes 16 blocks that can be taken out and used as building blocks or for seating. The storage wall features nine additional circular stools, with lockable storage for staff above. Planters here contribute to the calm and natural feel of this area.
The soft division between spaces is clear, yet the room is open to allow children to run around and experience every space while teachers can easily supervise them.
